Starting over…being an expat relocating to Guyana might seem like the ultimate exotic adventure…After all, where can you find a land unique for its vegetation (80% covered by rainforest) and unique for its people (Christians, Hindus, Muslims all worshipping together) all this blended in a Caribbean culture?

Yet relocating is not as exciting and glamorous as one may think. It is severing ties and hoping to build new ones, it is re-creating a home, and starting again in a new school…and a million of other needs that have to be fulfilled ..from the right doctor to the fun playdate…to make life enjoyable!

Unfortunately, no HR manager or HR staff has the time to fully assess each unique family’s personal needs and to guide them through during the entire move (before and after).

RELOCARING2GUYANA was created for that very reason.

Why prepare

and support?

Why is it so critical to prepare an individual or a family to relocate and to support them once in Guyana?

The Facts

According to Harvard business bureau studies, and INSEAD research, 30 to 50% of expat assignment ends in failure and early termination. A Cornell Study estimates employee assignments to have a failure rate in under developed countries of 70% (scholarship.sha.cornell.edu: Expatriate managers: reason for failure and Implications for training).

In a survey from National Foreign Trade Council, "up to a third of international assignments fail due to family stress, burn-out, increased workloads and cultural differences." According to this survey, the resources provided by companies rated as most important by employees include : relocation services (80%) and settling in services (63%).

In a survey of 196 HR managers, the main causes of failure are the following:

30%: the family is unable to adapt to the new country and culture.

28%: the employee is unable to adapt to the new country.

26%: the employee is unable to reach the stated objectives of the assignment.

The Costs

"Direct costs of a failed assignment can range from $250,000 to $1 million, and the annual cost of failures to all US companies is estimated at $2 billion. In addition, a foreign company can face damaged client relations and problems with local business and government." (International Assignment failure and tracking method).

"A recent study claimed that eight to ten work days are lost when an employee relocates within his country, and up to 20 days for some international relocations. In addition, a disenchanted employee may not fit in back at his origin country and, if so, they are likely to have far lower productivity. There are often issues with low self-esteem, lack of motivation, family problems, and even depression." (FIDI.org study)

The Reality Behind The Facts

The cold hard facts of these studies may justify the investment in our relocation services. Equally important are the lives of real people that are impacted by a positive expat experience or a failed one.
